A GOLF club plans to open a six-hole pitch and putt course after being awarded National Lottery funding.

Houghton-le-Spring Golf Club has been awarded £75,000 to upgrade practice facilities at the course, including three covered practice bays and a new pitch and putt course.

The club hopes the new facilities will encourage those who have never played the game before or wish to improve.

Lottery funding for the project has come through Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “It’s great to see Houghton-le-Spring Golf Club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.”

Local MP Bridget Phillipson said: “This investment by Sport England into Houghton-le-Spring Golf Club is fantastic news.

“There has always been a strong sporting tradition in this area and this money is an investment in young people for today and for the future.

“I welcome this investment which will encourage families to take up golf.”
