POLICE successfully negotiated with a man on the edge of a bridge in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

Motorists were asked to avoid an area of Gateshead while police dealt with the incident.

"At just after 11.35pm, on Wednesday, May 28, police received a report of a man on the wrong side of the railings on a bridge opposite the Shell garage running above the A184 and A6802 and near the Redheugh Bridge," said a Northumbria Police spokesman.

"Following negotiation with officers, the man returned to the right side of the railings. He has been detained by police and taken to hospital for assessment."
