ARSONISTS are believed to have started what could prove to be the third suspicious fire at stable blocks in the North-East in recent weeks.

The latest incident resulted in damage to stables at The Happy Farm, in East Boldon, South Tyneside, in the early hours of Tuesday (May 12).

Fire crews tackled the blaze, using forks to pull hay bales apart to ensure it was completely extinguished, and three horses were rescued, without injury.

The Northumbria force said inquiries are being carried out to establish the cause of the fire, but it was thought it was started deliberately and is being treated as arson.

Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt said: “Luckily no-one was injured in the fire, however, it has damaged the stables.

“We’re carrying out inquiries and asking any witnesses to come forward.

“At this stage we do not believe the fire is linked to previous incidents where there have been fires at stables, but recognise people may be concerned.

“Officers will continue to carry out regular patrols in our rural areas to offer reassurance to farm owners.”

Five horses were killed in a fire at stables in New Penshaw, on Wearside, on April 20, and two days later a stable block was damaged in a blaze, in John Street, Fencehouses.

Witnesses to the latest incident, at the stables in Station Approach, East Boldon, or anyone with information about any of the fires is asked to call Northumbria Police, on 101, extension 691691, quoting reference 137 120515, or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on (0800) 555111.
