POLICE are probing an arson at a stables.

The fire happened between 10.30pm on Monday (May 12) and 4.45am Tuesday (May 12) at stables at The Happy Farm in Back Station Approach, South Tyneside.

The stables were damaged as a result of the fire, noone was injured.

Enquiries are being carried out to establish the cause of the fire, however it is thought it was started deliberately and is being treated as arson.

Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt said: "Luckily noone was injured in the fire, however, it has damaged the stables. We're carrying out enquiries and asking any witnesses to come forward.

"At this stage we do not believe the fire is linked to previous incidents where there have been fires at stables, but recognise people may be concerned.

"Officers will continue to carry out regular patrols in our rural areas to offer reassurance to farm owners."
