TWO arrests have been made by police investigating an alleged daytime assault which left a man in a critical condition.

It follows a report received by the North-East Ambulance Service of a passer-by coming across a man lying on the ground semi-conscious in Gateshead, shortly before 3pm on Saturday (May 2).

Officers attended the scene, on Sunderland Road, where about four men were seen making off from the area.

The 41-year-old victim was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, suffering a head injury.

He was today (Sunday May 3) said to be in a critical condition.

As a result of follow up inquiries two men, aged 26 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

They were said to still be helping with police inquiries today.

Acting Detective Inspector Neil Wynd, from Northumbria Police’s major crime team, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident today and are keen for any witnesses to come forward.

“We have already spoken to a number of people, but this incident happened in the early afternoon when many people may have been going about their daily business.

“If anyone saw what happened to this man before he was discovered, or saw people leaving the area afterwards, they should contact police.”

He added that extra patrols are taking place in the area to offer reassurance to residents.

Anyone with any concern was welcome to speak to those officers on the ground.
