A NEW £11m leisure centre will open to the public in the summer

The centre at Washington, which is nearing completion, will feature two water flumes, a six lane 25m pool and learner pool with interactive water features.

It will also have a multi-purpose hall for international standard trampoline training, a two-level soft play area and a gym twice the size of the existing one.

Other features include a four court sports hall, two glass backed squash courts, and sauna and steam rooms with an additional relaxation area.

A second phase of the project will see six state-of-the-art 3rd Generation (3G) artificial grass, five-a-side football pitches and a 100 space car park.

The new centre has been built next to the old Washington Leisure Centre which will be demolished when the new facility opens,on June 1.

Neil Revely, Sunderland City Council's Executive Director of People Services, said: "It's been fantastic to see the new Washington Leisure Centre taking shape over the last few months with all the excellent facilities it has to offer. The new centre will be a real asset for the area."
