POLICE in this region supported national motorcycle safety week.

The Association of Police Officers (Acpo) staged a week of awareness raising work last week.

Officers from Northumbria Police’s Operation Dragoon road safety team were out and about speaking to bikers and passing on riding advice and information.

A cornering clinic and motorbike road safety session was held at RAF Boulmer and about 200 bright yellow signs warning bikers about the dangers of speeding were placed on rural roads across the county.

Four bikers were killed in the Northumbria force area last year and 74 were seriously injured.

Chief Inspector John Heckels said: “Bikers are a particularly vulnerable audience on the roads and it’s so important that they ride safely and defensively.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird also gave her backing to the campaign.
