A TRADITIONAL Easter event took place on Good Friday instead of Maundy Thursday for the first time.

The annual decorated egg-rolling competition on Penshaw Hill, the Penshaw Bowl, was held once again for children aged 11 and under.

The event was opened by The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Stuart Porthouse, who said: “Children all over the city look forward to this fantastic, free, family event which brings people together to help celebrate a very special time of year.

"I’m delighted that we can once again deliver a great event with something for all ages.

“The Penshaw Bowl is a mix of traditional celebrations and fun activities with something for everyone.”

There was also an activity marquee in Herrington Country Park with a range of family friendly Easter activities.

This year’s event was sponsored by Sainsbury’s who provided a range of chocolate prizes including a small treat for every child who took part.

Derek Crooks, customer service manager at Sainsbury’s, said: “Playing an active role in the community that we serve and making a positive difference is one of our company values, and one that we stand by whole heartedly.

“This is why we believe getting involved in events such as Penshaw Bowl is important, plus it’s a lot of fun.”

The event is organised by Sunderland Live on behalf of Sunderland City Council.
