WAR medals were stolen in a break-in at a pensioner’s house.

It happened in Park Lane, Winlaton, Gateshead, between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday, March 17. Burglars smashed a window to break-in to the property.

Sergeant Adrian Oakes, from the Outer West Gateshead Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Burglars have stolen war medals in this burglary which have great sentimental value for the elderly occupants and cannot be replaced.

"We really would urge anyone who might have information about where they maybe, in particular, second hand shops or anyone who has been offered them for sale, to contact us so the medals can be returned to the rightful owner."

Witnesses are urged to contact Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69191, quoting reference 622 170315 .

They can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The appeal comes as Northumbria Police continues to crackdown on burglars as part of Operation Soundwave. Crime prevention advice plays a key part in the initiative and officers are continuing to remind residents to make sure their properties are secure and doors are locked, even when they are in the house.

Residents are also urged to install outside lighting and a burglar alarm.

Sgt Oakes added: "We know the majority of burglars are opportunist and see a chance to break into a property and take it.

“We want residents to do everything they can to help stop these thieves in their tracks and make it difficult for them to steal.

"Police are carrying out regular patrols in the area to offer reassurance to residents who may be concerned and offer crime prevention advice. In addition, we are working with partner agencies to provide extra support to those who may be vulnerable."
