A FOOTBALL charity will host an event next week to reward and recognise its shining stars.

Several current Sunderland players will be on hand to give out 17 awards at the Foundation of Light’s annual Top Scorer event, held at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, April 1.

The charity was set up in 2001 using football to educate, inspire and motivate, working with more than 40,000 people every year and raise over £3m annually.

Sir Bob Murray CBE, chairman of the Foundation, said “I go to a lot of events every year, but Top Scorers has long been a favourite of mine.

“I’m always amazed by the achievements of our participants and always leave feeling inspired by the very personal stories of success and achievement.

“It’s also a great opportunity to thank our sponsors and partners, who do so much to enable the Foundation to deliver its pioneering programmes.”

Winners come from across Wearside, South Tyneside and Durham and attend programmes at the Foundation, including disability sport, employability, family learning and alternative education.

Coverage of the event will be available at the Foundation’s new dedicated website www.foundationoflight.co.uk, further information on the event can also be found here.
