A CHARITY is hoping to recruit new lifeguards to patrol the region’s beaches over the summer season.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is looking for new recruits to help with its lifesaving work in Tyne and Wear starting at the end of May.

It will be running a lifeguard course in Sunderland so potential candidates who don’t have the necessary qualification can still apply.

Simon Bristow, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, said: ‘RNLI lifeguards develop life-enhancing skills, one moment you could be offering safety advice and the next performing major first aid.’

Applicants wills be trained in lifeguard theory, basic life support and first aid. As well as developing pool and open water swimming skills.

The course will take place from April 12 to April 17 with the assessment day on April 19. Applicants must be 16 or older and have a high level of general fitness.

The course will cost £160 per person, which covers both the training and certificate if you are successful.
