THE public is being given the chance to have their say on the look of a prime city centre site following g major re-development.

Transformation of part of the centre of Sunderland will initially focus on High Street West, from Fawcett Street to the new Keel Square.

The second phase will take in a section from Keel Square, past the old Fire Station and Empire Theatre, to the junction with St. Michael’s Way.

Environmental changes could include new paving, lighting, planting, signage and street furniture.

A sum of £3.5m has been set aside for the works in High Street.

Sunderland City Council cabinet secretary, Mel Speding, said the aim is to make prime central areas more inviting and improve access, in order to attract more private sector investment.

“High Street West is a key part of our plans.

“It’s a main route in the city centre, linking the university campus, as well as shopping and leisure facilities.

“We’re keen for local residents and businesses to get involved in the planning of how it will look and feel in the future.”

Consultation sessions take place on Wednesday (February 25) from 9.30am - 5.30pm and Thursday ,(February 26) between 9.30am and 8pm.

Both will be held in a “pod” parked outside the Marks & Spencer store, on High Street West.

Staff from the City Council will be available to discuss the project and feedback used to develop draft design proposals.

Following further consultation on the draft designs, work is planned to start in early next year.
