SOME of the region’s best-known comedians are to hold a stand-up show in aid of the victims of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris.
The Stand Comedy Club, in Newcastle is hosting the event on January 27 which will feature acts including BBC Radio Newcastle breakfast presenter Alfie Joey and Gavin Webster, who previously had a residency at the venue.
The event comes just weeks after gunmen entered the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on January 7 and killed 12 people.
Money raised at the comedy show will go to helping the 11 people who were injured and the families of the dead. Half of the profits will also go to benefitting the Muslim community.
Stand Comedy Club Managing Director Tommy Sheppard said: “Comedians, satirists and journalists know that courting controversy can often come with the territory.
“While not everyone may agree on what is ripe for parody and fun-poking, what we can agree on is that no one deserves to die for exercising their freedom of speech.
“We use humour to poke fun at authority and cope with the horrors of living. It is part of a democracy.
“We are proud to stand with satirists everywhere and we will make sure that laughter will not be silenced.”
Doors open to the show at 7.30pm and tickets are £10.
