AN RAF helicopter crew joined in the search for a man who fell in to the River Tyne.

The alert was sounded at about 9.40am this morning (Wednesday, December 17) by a passer-by who saw a man fall from the Redheugh Bridge.

A search and rescue effort began that saw the helicopter comb the area.

Police and fire crews took part in the search, along with RNLI volunteers and the Tynemouth Life Brigade

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service had a fire boat out.

The search covered a long stretch of the river but was scaled back by late morning.

As darkness fell there was no sign of the missing man.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said the search would resume tomorrow (Thursday, December 18) morning.
