FORMER Steps singer Faye Tozer will help switch on Sunderland’s Christmas lights.

The 90s pop star will join Mayor of Sunderland Stuart Porthouse and a star from the Empire Theatre’s Christmas pantomime in pressing the button on Thursday, November 13,

Ms Tozer, who lives in the region with her Sunderland-born husband, said: “'I am delighted to be a part of this year’s Christmas light switch-on to celebrate the city's improvements and bring the season in with a sparkle”

Cllr Porthouse said: “Our annual light switch-on has long been recognised as a spectacular, bright and colourful event that begins our countdown to Christmas.

“Lights at Christmas always help remind us of how welcoming the festive season is and our switch-on is a fantastic family and community occasion for everyone to enjoy.”

The event at the Crowtree site will feature a full stage programme from 6pm including City Sings winners East Herrington Primary School Choir and Eclipse, Southmoor Secondary School Choir and the County Durham rhythm and blues band The Revolutionaires.

The finale will be a spectacular firework display.

Chris Alexander, Chief Operating Officer of local events company Sunderland Live said “The Christmas Lights switch-on is a special event in Sunderland’s calendar as it marks the beginning of our full Christmas programme which will run right up until January 6.”
