POLICE are warning householders, particularly the elderly, to be on their guard for bogus callers.

An elderly resident in the Ryhope area of Sunderland was targeted by a number of suspicious people.

Officers from the Northumbria force believe the doorstep callers may have pressured the victim into paying potentially thousands of pounds for small jobs carried out at his home.

Inquiries are said to be ongoing and police are advising residents to be on the look-out for bogus workmen and callers.

Inspector Henry Gustard said: “With winter approaching, when many people may be considering having work done on their homes, unfortunately, there are people out there who may take advantage of this by cold calling and offering for work to be done.

“We’ve seen examples across the force where this results in extortionate amounts being charged for sub-standard work, and thefts from inside people’s homes.

“It’s a timely reminder for people to be vigilant.”

He urged them to seek quotes from several companies before agreeing to have work carried out, while workmen’s identities and company credentials should always be checked.

Insp Gustard added: “Never agree to work being done by people who cold call at your home, and never leave people alone in the house, even for a few seconds.

“I would also advise that any cash or valuables are moved out of sight.”

He urged people to also “look out” for elderly relatives and neighbours, and to report any suspicious people or vehicles seen in their community to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, but on-going crimes should be reported via 999.
