POLICE are appealing for information after an elderly woman had her purse stolen.

It happened at 11.55am on Thursday, October 9, in Edwin Street, an alleyway at the side of Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle, between Ladbrokes and Saint Oswald's Hospice charity shop.

The victim, a woman in her 80s, was spoken to by another woman. While she was distracted a man approached and opened a basket the victim had and took her purse containing cash and bank cards.

The woman is described as white, about 5ft 2ins to 5ft 6ins tall of medium build, short light brown hair.

She was wearing dark coloured trousers and a dark brown jacket.

The man is described as white, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, of average build, with short dark hair and wearing dark clothing.

PC Angela Pattison said: "These two took advantage of an elderly woman and stole property from her, and we're appealing for anyone with information or who recognises their descriptions to get in touch with us."
