TWO men posing as police officers stole money after conning their way into a pensioner’s home.

The pair, who were not wearing uniform, called at the 84-year-old’s home in Springwell Road, Sunderland, and said they were policemen.

Police believe they left the area in a vehicle.

Officers investigating the incident, which happened at 7.30pm on Wednesday ( September 24) are making house to house enquiries and are appealing for witnesses.

Northumbria Police Detective Inspector Dave English said: "I'd like to remind people to be vigilant.

“Residents should check the identity of anyone who cold calls at their door, and if someone claims to be a police officer, they should make sure they ask to see a warrant card and check it carefully before admitting them into their home.

"If in any doubt, don’t let them in and contact the police by calling 101. In addition, residents should never hand over money to people who cold call, nor should they give bank details or agree to any work at their property being done by people who knock at the door unexpectedly.

"I'd urge anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have seen anything suspicious to get in touch as soon as possible.

"Neighbourhood officers are carrying out additional patrols in the area to reassure residents."

Anyone with information about the incident should call Northumbria Oolice on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 1184 of 24/09/14, or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
