ENERGY company call centre workers took part in a bungee jump to raise money for a leading cancer charity.

More than 50 npower employees took the plunge into a giant coffee cup at the firm’s North-East headquarters at Rainton Bridge, near Houghton-le-Spring.

The event was staged to support Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest fundraising event, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which is happening this week.

The company has been supporting the charity for ten years and the bungee jump looks set to have raised about £6,000 towards its work.

Customer advisor Amanda Ridley said: “There was a great atmosphere at the office today and when it was my turn, I screamed all the way down.

“I’ve had family members, friends and colleagues diagnosed with cancer, so I’m very proud that our partnership with Macmillan means that we can raise money to help them to continue their great work, ensuring that no one has to face cancer alone.”

Clare McDougall, head of community at npower, said: “I’m so proud of the dozens of people – many of whom have a fear of heights – who have dived into the coffee morning this year.

“Macmillan means a lot to the people of npower, and the fact that we’ve raised almost £95,000 so far this year is testament to that.”

Some of the money raised will go towards funding new energy advisors on the Macmillan Support Line, which helps cancer sufferers who struggle with bills.
