A PROGRAMME of improvement works begin on a seafront road on a busy stretch of the North-East coast, on Monday (September 22).

The roadworks are part of Sunderland City Council’s continuing regeneration of the adjoining sea fronts of Seaburn and Roker.

They include the introduction of a 20mph zone between the Morrison’s store and Seaburn Marriott Hotel roundabouts, on the A183 Whitburn Road.

Essential repairs to the damaged promenade at Seaburn are scheduled to feature in the project.

City council cabinet secretary Mel Speding said the programme of works also features the refurbishment of Roker Pier.

“Now, after the peak summer season, we’re getting on with more works along the seafront at Seaburn.

“We’ve made a commitment to regeneration, improvement and repair works all along our seafront.”

Councillor Speding added that the scheme takes in local demand for more crossing points along the A183.

The entire work programme is expected to run up to next spring.
