A RUSSIAN student has admitted making an explosive substance after two bomb scares at a university resulted in evacuations and a controlled explosion.

Vladimir Aust, 18, was arrested in London after a suspicious substance was found in a building at Newcastle University.

The INTO language complex was twice evacuated and a controlled explosion was conducted after bomb disposals teams were sent in.

Wearing a blue t-shirt and appearing by video link at Newcastle Crown Court, Aust confirmed his name and entered a plea of guilty to the charge of making an explosive substance.

This related to his manufacture of the substance hexamethylenetriperoxidediamine (HMTD) between September 1, 2013, and June 11, 2014, which is a volatile explosive often used in the mining industry.

The bomb scares in June resulted in chaos in Newcastle city centre with a major bus station being evacuated as well as the University.

A major police presence remained at the site for much of the night and a bomb disposal robot was seen entering the building.

A charge of carrying two knives near to the Russian embassy in London was dropped by the prosecution after Aust pleaded not guilty to it.

Judge James Goss QC adjourned the case and said sentencing would take place next month.
