A LIVE music festival featuring chart-topping acts rocked the North-East coast this weekend.

Scottish supergroup Texas, whose hits include Black Eyed Boy and Say What You Want, led the line-up at SoundWaves 2014 at South Shields on Saturday.

Lead singer Sharleen Spiteri, who has also enjoyed a successful solo career, said: “This was our first time playing in South Tyneside but we always get a great reception in the North East.”

The group, who have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide, were joined for the gig at Bents Park, South Shields, by soul singer Gabrielle, girl group All Saints and South Tyneside singer Lulu James.

Gabrielle, who is celebrating more than 20 years at the top, has already produced ten top ten singles, including number one hits, Rise and Out of Reach, and recently returned to the spotlight following a short career break to raise a family.

She said: “I’ve never performed with any of the artists on the SoundWaves line up before, but I was really excited to be sharing the bill with them and it really was an amazing day.”

Multi award-winning girl group All Saints, who recently performed at V Festival, are also enjoying a comeback after initially enjoying more than 10m album sales in the late nineties and into the millennium with tracks including Never Ever, Black Coffee and Pure Shores.

The top selling trio of big name acts were joined for the open air, bank holiday gig, by soul singer Lulu James, who is already making waves on the international music scene with early tracks including Closer and Sweetest Thing.

Alan Kerr, deputy leader for South Tyneside Council, which organised SoundWaves 2014, said: “Texas, Gabrielle and All Saints are among the biggest names in British music, earning millions of album sales across the world.

“SoundWaves 2014 offered the opportunity to see this unique line-up showcasing some of their greatest hits, as well as the chance to potentially hear some new material and enjoy a performance by rising star Lulu James.”
