FOOTBALL fans are reminded of new residents-only parking scheme in streets near Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

The new permit-only parking scheme, applying to 60 streets in the vicinity of the stadium, in nearby Monkwearmouth and Southwick.

It comes into force for Sunderland’s opening home Premier League of the new season, against Manchester United, on Sunday (August 24) at 4pm.

The scheme was introduced following consultation with local residents and applies to all match days and also when the stadium plays host to other major events, such as concert nights.

Motorists will be informed of the new ‘permit only’ parking system by gateway signs on entering the affected area, with further notices mounted in each street included in the scheme.

The single yellow lines and signs previously in place have been removed and residents have been asked to apply for parking permits.

The council advises supporters travelling from outside the immediate area to make use of alternative parking areas, or use public transport, or park and ride services.

Secure multi-storey car parking is available approximately ten minutes walk from the stadium, on St Mary’s Way, or Sunniside, in the city centre.

The maximum Sunday charge is £1 in both car parks.

More information on the scheme is available via www.sunderland.gov.uk/parking-sol, the council’s website, which lists the 60 streets where the scheme comes into force, from Sunday.
