MUSEUM visitors can learn how to do the Haka at an exhibition devoted to Maori culture.

The Great North Museum: Hancock, in Newcastle, will hold its Haka Day Out on Thursday (July 31).

People can learn the traditional Haka, see performances of traditional Maori songs and dances and get to handle Maori artefacts not usually on display.

Haka Day Out will introduce visitors to New Zealand’s native people, history and culture, how to perform the Haka - the famous traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand, made famous by the New Zealand rugby team's pre-match displays.

Haka workshops will be held between 1pm and 1.30pm and from 2.30pm to 3pm.

Between 1.30pm and 1.40pm and from 3pm to 3.15pm there will be Maori performances with a medley of traditional dance, songs, Poi and Taiaha dance displays, and from 3.10pm to 3.20pm there will be a group Haka.
