TWO people have been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a head-on collision.

The Great North Air Ambulance sent two helicopters to the scene in Greenside, near Ryton, near Gateshead, shortly after 3.30pm today.

A man, approximately 20-years-old, with multiple serious injuries and a second man, in his 50s, with severe chest injuries were airlifted to the RVI, in Newcastle.

Police, fire and ambulance crews also attended the scene, at which there were a further four patients.
