A TRADITIONAL North-East Easter event was back on the calendar today (Thursday, April 17) after being cancelled last year.

The annual Maundy Thursday egg rolling competition on Penshaw Hill, near Sunderland, was called off because of the weather conditions.

But the Penshaw Bowl went ahead again this year with dozens of youngsters aged up to 11 and their families taking part in the free event, which was opened by Sunderland Mayor Robert Heron.

Coun Heron said "Over the years children all over the city have looked forward to this fantastic, free, family event.

“This annual event brings people together to help celebrate and enjoy a very special time of year.

“We are delighted to work with our partners and sponsors to continue to deliver events such as Penshaw Bowl.

In addition to the competition on Penshaw Hill, an activity marquee in the nearby Herrington Country Park offered face painting, egg decorating and Easter crafts. The event was held by Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Live and was sponsored by Sainsbury’s who provided chocolate prizes including a small treat for every child that took part.
