A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a house fire which claimed the life of a man.

A police spokesman said a 53-year-old man, who suffered severe burns in a fire in Gateshead yesterday (Tuesday, April 15) had died of his injuries in hospital this morning.

A 45-year-old man, who is in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently helping police with inquiries.

A police spokesman said firefighters were called to a blaze at an address on Redemarsh, Leam Lane, at 6.35pm yesterday.

Officers attended the scene along with the fire and ambulance service.

Two men from inside the property were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

Police are investigating the fire and have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Christina Barrett, from Northumbria Police's Major Crime Team, said: "The investigation is in its very early stages and we are working with the fire service to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.

"Early indications are that the fire was started inside the property.

"We would like to speak to anyone who thinks they may have information that could help us with our enquiries.

"Anyone who knows those inside the property and who may have seen them earlier in the day should also come forward as this could help with our investigation.

"Officers are in the area to offer reassurance to residents and anyone with concerns should speak to them."
