MORE than 100 steam locomotives and vehicles of all shapes and sizes will be gathered at an open air museum at the museum for the Great War Steam Fair.

The event at Beamish Museum, near Stanley, focused on the centenary year of the end of the war and featured an array of locomotives, traction engines, steam rollers, cars, lorries and motorbikes, many of them in military colours and livery.

Rosie Nichols, Beamish’s Keeper of Social History, said: “Our Great War Steam Fair marked 100 years since the end of the First World War, telling the story of men and women involved in the conflict through an exploration of pre-1920s vehicles.

“The event was a great success, and we have received some fantastic comments from visitors who were amazed by the number, and variety, of different vehicles on show and in action.”

Adding to the First World War theme were military re-enactment groups Durham Pals, Gordon Highlanders, Scots at War, 10th Essex and the 29th Field Kitchen taking part in with displays.
