POWERFUL painkillers meant for horses have been stolen during a burglary at a County Durham stables.

Burglars struck at stables near Stanley and took a number of equestrian items including several sachets of Danilon, a prescription-only pain medication for horses.

The substance is potentially dangerous if taken by humans and is known to cause irreversible liver damage.

The burglary happened at premises on the Causey Road, next to the Tanfield Railway, overnight between November 5 and the following morning.

A police spokesman appealed for witnesses to come forward and are particularly keen to trace the sachets of Danilon, saying: “This could be dangerous if consumed by humans and we would ask that people keep an eye out for the medication, in case it gets into the hands of children”.

Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Police on 101, quoting crime number CRI00088617.
