A SCHOOLBOY has raised over £275 for charity with a sponsored bike ride.

Ten-year-old Callum Richardson, from Stanley, cycled five miles from Greencroft to Beamish on Thursday.

He was raising money for the Children’s Heat Unit Fund in Newcastle, in honour of his friend, Rhys Charlton, ten, who was treated for a heart murmur there.

Callum, a pupil at St Patrick’s School in Dipton, was diagnosed with ADHD, aged five, and autism earlier this year.

As well as collecting sponsors, he has contributed his own pocket money, bought prizes for a raffle and sold ticket to raise the cash.

Proud mother Vicky Roach said: “His friend was found to have a heart murmur when he was eight weeks old and he was seriously poorly.

“He has spent a great deal of time in intensive care while they decided how best to deal with his complex heart problems.

“He amazed everyone with his speedy recovery while being cared for by all the wonderful staff attached to the children’s heart unit.

“Callum is a very caring and concerned ten year-old. We are all very proud of him.”

Rhys’s mother, Christina Charlton, is also raising money for CHUF by taking part in the Great North Run next weekend.
