JUDGES from Northumbria In Bloom have arrived to begin running the rule over three community efforts to improve the environment.

Finishing touches are being put to floral displays in Stanley, Durham and Chester-le-Street as judges from the Royal Horticultural Society Northumbria in Bloom campaign arrive.

Durham City is taking part in the Small City category, having won gold last year; Chester-le-Street is in the Large Town category having won silver gilt last time while Stanley, taking part in the competition for the third time, is in the Town category.

Judges visited in April and return this week for the final summer assessment ahead of the results being announced on September 13.

Oliver Sherratt, from Durham County Council, said: “Judges will get to see how well community schemes and projects have evolved since spring and we want to showcase how hard all volunteers, partners and organisations work to add value to the places they live, work and visit”.
