TWO women who have worked at a supermarket from day one have helped celebrate its 40th birthday.

Asda in Stanley opened its doors in May 1977 with employees Maureen Taylor and Irene Stacey there from the start.

This week, they were guests of honour at a special event to mark the occasion and were presented with flowers, chocolates and a cake.

Customers got involved in ‘Checkout Bingo’ with small prizes being given out to shoppers going through the tills on the 40th minute of every hour.

Ms Stacey said: “The presentation was a nice surprise for both of us. We were really made a fuss of and it was lovely of the colleagues to organise it.

“I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed working here for 40 years and I hope to make it to 45.

“It was great to see all the customers involved on the day too.

“There were loads that recognised both of us and it was a lovely day.”
