A CHILDREN’S author is helping to encourage the next generation of writers and illustrators.

Niel Bushnell has been appointed ‘Patron of Reading’ at North Durham Academy in Stanley.

The award-winning writer, from Hartlepool, has two time-travel adventures published by Andersen Press, and has completed two further novels.

He is currently working on a picture book for younger children, which he is also illustrating.

As well as writing, Mr Bushnell has a background in animation, working on numerous shows for the BBC and Hollywood feature films including Space Jam.

His first novel, Sorrowline, won a Northern Promise Award and was long-listed for the Blue Peter Book Awards.

Mr Bushnell has also worked as an animator on BBC productions including CBBC’s The Dumping Ground.

He said: “It’s a real honour to be working with North Durham Academy and I’m looking forward to getting started with the pupils there soon.

“I’d like to encourage the students to explore their ideas and develop their stories as far as possible.”

As well as working with English students, Mr Bushnell will also spend some time in the art department, passing on tips and advice for budding illustrators and animators.

Mr Bushnell said: “I’ve worked in animation for over twenty years, it’s an enjoyable industry to work in and it can take you all over the world.

“I’m keen to see if there are any future Walt Disneys hiding at North Durham Academy.”
