A COMMUNITY event to celebrate the work of the armed forces will be held in north Durham.

Stanley Front Street is hosting the military event on Sunday, June 26.

It is part of Armed Forces Day, the annual national campaign that gives people the opportunity to show their support for servicemen and woman past and present, including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans and cadets.

Brian Hall, community service officer of Stanley Town Council and the event organiser, said: “The council is keen to show its support for the Armed Forces.

“This event should be a great opportunity for people to meet and see the work our regular and reserve forces do.”

In peacetime, members of the forces, including the army, navy and air force, defend the country and its interests around the world.

Their role in times of peace includes delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, promoting peace, and providing security as well as fighting terrorism.

There will be military displays courtesy of 101 Regiment Royal Artillery, field kitchen displays, a funfair, and lots more.

Councillor Joan Nicholson, council chairman, said: “It is a great honour to be hosting an event to honour our Armed Forces and to show the strength of our community links with them.”
