A HOUSING charity has been given a grant of £2,500 to help young people live independently.

Shaid, based in Stanley, is being supported by the Maximus Foundation UK to develop its work providing housing advice and support services.

The charity will use the award to help vulnerable people get homes and to reduce social isolation among men in an area with the highest male suicide rate in the country.

Kevin Howe, Shaid’s manager, received a cheque from Suzanne Frew, trustee of Maximus Foundation UK, and Iain Coupar from Maximus who nominated the charity for the award.

Mr Howe said: “We receive very positive reports from local residents about how our work is positively impacting the local community.

“We remain determined to provide housing, financial and mental health advice to people who might otherwise struggle to cope.”

The Maximus Foundation UK was founded last year and provides grants to charities and non-profit organisations that support disadvantaged groups.

Chairman Marilyn Saunders said: “Shaid is working with some very vulnerable people, and giving them the tools to improve their quality of life and to live independently.

“The value of their work and the commitment of their volunteers is exemplary.”
