A FAMILY fun day is being held on Saturday to mark the official opening of a north Durham sports facility.

Stanley Community Football Centre, on Tyne Road, is being unveiled following the completion of a £50,000 renovation project.

The work has transformed the site following the closure of Stanley School of Technology three years ago.

Over 600 people a week now use the new sport and fitness facilities, which includes a 3G floodlit Astroturf pitch.

Pitches are all available for hire, alongside a fully-furnished community room designed for conferences, training, meetings, and birthday parties and there is a kitchen as well as changing and outdoor sports areas.

The centre is also home to Beamish Community Football Club and Stanley Youth Club.

Activities at the fun day, organised by Stanley Events, include a penalty competition, football tennis, a bouncy castle, inflatables, a tombola, a climbing wall, caricature pictures, plus refreshments.

Durham County Councillor Carl Marshall, who is a director of Stanley Events, said: “It has taken a tremendous amount of work by a dedicated team of volunteers, working alongside the county council and partners to help bring this derelict site that was destined for demolition back into use for the local community.”

The fun day is from 10am-3pm.
