A RETIRED teacher suffered a cut lip after an egg was thrown from a moving car.

Former history teacher Patrick McCue, 78, stopped to talk to a friend in Stanley, County Durham, when the attack place, at around 4.30pm on Tuesday, outside the barber shop in Shield Row.

Mr McCue, who lives nearby and taught at St Bede’s in Lanchester, said: “I was standing chatting when all of sudden a missile hit me.

“At the first impact I thought it was a brick or something like that. You would not expect an egg to have such an impact.

“It startled me and knocked the wind out of my sails. It shattered as it hit me.”

The egg smashed into Mr McCue’s mouth, covering his coat with yolk and left him with a cut on his lip.

He added: “It bled for about an hour. I could not get it to stop bleeding, but eventually it did.

“I had the yolk all over my coat. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I would not like to put in in print what I think about them. It is just mindless. I cannot understand anyone wanting to throw an egg at somebody standing on the pavement minding their own business.”

The matter has been reported to the police who are investigating and are urging the person responsible to come forward.

Sergeant Dave Clarke said: “It is quite shocking. He shouldn’t have to suffer this.

“It goes without saying we are extremely interested in speaking to the person responsible for this attack and would ask that anyone who has any information to come forward.

“We will be looking at CCTV as we want to find out who has done this. It is in their own interests to contact me themselves though sooner rather than later.”
