A TEACHING assistant who launched a school breakfast club has been nominated for an award.
Helen Walker, who works at Greenland Community Primary School in South Moor, Stanley, was put forward due to her tireless work in making sure pupils eat a proper breakfast every day.
She started the club in September 2010, funding it herself, and is a Breakfast Club Hero finalist in the national Kellogs Breakfast Club Awards.
The winner will receive their award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on December 8.
Mrs Walker said: “To be shortlisted for this award is a real honour.
“I’ve worked at the Greenland Community Primary School Breakfast Club for many years, it is my passion.
“But it’s not about recognising my hard work, it’s about doing something more for the children that rely upon it.
“To win the overall category and receive £1,500 for the club would provide them with resources we currently only dream of, more importantly though it will enable us to provide a hot option for children and continue to provide a safe, secure and healthy start to their day.”
The final winners of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards will be announced via a web broadcast on November 9, by the star of hit television show Educating Yorkshire, Matt Burton.
The final stage of the competition will be down to a readers’ vote and people in the area are being encouraged to show their support.
