YOUNGSTERS in north Durham have been learning about healthy eating.

Pupils at Greenland Community Primary School, in South Moor, Stanley have been taking part in the Fun with Food Week.

The initiative has been developed by the school meals provider, Taylor Shaw, to show children how food is made and where it comes from.

The aim is to help them to develop a positive relationship with food and a healthier lifestyle in a fun and interactive way.

School spokesman Louise Milbourne said: “We are also using this as an opportunity to encourage children and parents to opt for school meals as opposed to packed lunches as this is a far healthier option and often not as expensive.”

Throughout the week children are taking part in a number of activities, such as bread, ice cream, pasta and yoghurt making.

They are also learning about the importance of good hand washing and hygiene.

Ms Milbourne said: “All of the resources are very visual and hands on and all activities will link in with children's core learning.

“On Thursday, parents and governors are invited to our Fun with Food assembly where children will showcase what they have learned.

“It is also an opportunity for them to sample first hand some of the food that the children have made.”
