A COMMUNITY event to mark the 30th anniversary of an environmental regeneration charity in the North-East has been held today. (Monday, May 4)

A car boot sale and family fun activities were held at The Greenhouse, Groundwork’s eco-building, in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, in County Durham.

There was face-painting, hook-a-duck, cartoon characters and cake stands as well as ‘upcycling’ activities to breathe new life into old items.

Partnerships manager Michele Armstrong, from Groundwork, said: “We were really pleased. It is the first time we have done it.

“A member of staff suggested it would the ideal location so we decided to give it a shot. It went very well and people have asked if we are going to do another one.

“In terms of a being pilot project and raising awareness of Groundwork as an organisation it was a success.”

Around £50 was collected for a community chest to help fund projects and pay for various initiatives in the area.

Ms Armstrong: “We work with individuals, community groups and businesses and it is all about looking about the environment they are in and how we can improve it.

“Today was really about recycling and upcycling as that is where our roots are and it was an event about celebrating our 30 years in the North-East.”
