BOWLS players from around the British Isles are coming to a County Durham town for an international tournament.

Stanley Indoor Bowls Club, above Asda, at the top of Front Street, is hosting both the International Series and the British Isles Series and Championships this month.

The Ladies International Series gets underway this Friday and runs until Sunday.

The championship runs from Monday to Wednesday and the Men's International Series runs from next Thursday to Saturday.

Peter Thompson, from the English Indoor Bowling Association, the governing body for the sport in England, said: “The venue is in great condition, as it was the last time we were here and we have some of the best players in the UK to play on it.

“Both myself and the players always like coming to the North-East and Stanley in particular.

“The atmosphere is great and the people really know their bowls in County Durham.”

A range of medalists who took part in the recent Commonwealth Games in Scotland will be taking part.

England's Helen Faulkner, Sian Honnor and Sophie Tolchard came away from Glasgow with gold while in the men's competition Scotland's gold medalists Paul Forster MBE, Darren Burnett and Neil Speirs will be up against Sam Tolchard, who just missed out on taking bronze in Glasgow.
