A TEENAGER and a four-year-old boy had a lucky escape after a car collided with them as they rode a bike.

Nineteen-year-old Jordan Elliott had been to the shops with little McKenzie Bell when they went over the bonnet of the green Rover 25.

They had been riding back together on a BMX bike and crashed into the windscreen, leaving them both with nasty cuts and grazes.

Jordan said: “I was coming down on the bike and tried to stop when I saw the car coming but I could not stop in time. The car has smacked us and I tried to cover McKenzie. I hit the windscreen and smacked my head off the window and rolled off and hit my head on the floor.

“I jumped straight back up but was as dizzy as out. It could have been a lot worse.”

McKenzie’s mum Christine Coyle said his life was saved by Jordan after he instinctively curled his arms around her boy to protect him.

The 28-year-old said: “He saved his life because when they got near the car his instinct was to wrap his arms around him. He knew what was going to happen and covered him right up.

“When they were on the bonnet Jordan took all of the impact. He said he was not bothered about himself. He was worried about the bairn.”

The incident happened at around 10.30am on Saturday near the boys’ homes on Hollyhill Gardens East in South Stanley, County Durham.

Jordan, who needed six stitches in his head, has cuts, grazes and bruises on his body and legs with ligament and muscle tissue damage.

He was rushed to the University Hospital of North Durham by ambulance.

McKenzie had grazes on his head, a cut to his groin, bad bruising on his left leg and a graze on his arm and chest.

Miss Coyle said she had began to panic when she saw the Burnside Primary School reception class pupil lying in the street.

The mother-of-four said: “It went running out and saw my youngest child lying there. I was screaming. It was horrible. His pants were ripped and there was a massive hole in his t-shirt. He could not move or get up. He was as white as a sheet. It was the worst day of my life.”

McKenzie was also taken to hospital by ambulance, treated and kept in until 10pm on Saturday for observation.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and bailed by officers on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified and driving under the influence of alcohol.
