SHOPKEEPERS are being encouraged to improve their security by joining an award-winning scheme.

Traders in Consett and Stanley are being invited to join the Shopwatch scheme run by Durham County Council.

The scheme, which links shops to local CCTV operators by radio and offers full training to staff, secured two honours at the recent Best of Shopwatch Awards and was described by the North East Retail Crime Partnership as “something outstanding”.

Alison Burgess, manager of the Factory Shop in Stanley, said: “We are now in full swing using the Shopwatch radio link.

“Our stock loss has halved, our profit has lifted, job security increased and our team feel more secure knowing back up is there.”

Cllr Neil Foster, council cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “The Shopwatch scheme is another example of how the council is helping make sure businesses large and small can prosper in County Durham.

“We’re delighted that the success of the scheme was recognised at the recent Best of Shopwatch awards and would encourage any businesses in Consett and Stanley who haven’t yet signed up to get in touch and see how they can benefit.”
