AN ARMY veteran who became a regular swimmer since being referred by his GP several years ago to improve his health has taken on two sponsored swims for charity.

Brian Kemp, 77, of Tanfield Lea, in north Durham, has been a regular user of the Louisa Centre in nearby Stanley.

Having participated in sponsored swims for charities for over four years, he has raised more than £1,800, and this month aims to raise hundreds of pounds by swimming for two different causes.

His first half-mile sponsored swim today (Friday, October 10) will raise funds for a cause close to his local GP, who plans to build a health clinic for the people of poverty-ravished Burkina Faso, in West Africa. Mr Kemp has already raised over £400 for the cause.

As he has been a member of The British Legion since 1963, Brian's second half-mile swim will raise money for the Consett and District branch.

Mr Kemp completed his national service from 1958 to 1960 with the 1st Battalion The King’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, during which he was stationed in Cyprus.

He said: “The Louisa Centre is a great place and those of us that come to the swim sessions on a Friday morning are just like family.

“I’ve been coming here many years now and find that swimming for charity gives me so much more motivation, especially when it’s for such great causes.”
