A POLICE officer is using her international sporting background to connect with young people in the North-East.

Former England netball player Kelly Martin, the neighbourhood inspector for Stanley in County Durham, is working as mentor and coach with Greencroft Netball Club, near Stanley, County Durham.

The 39-year-old, who lives in the Chester-le-Street area, played centre court, and is hoping the sport will break down barriers between young women and the police.

Insp Martin, who has also done television commentating work, said: “It is about teamwork and discipline and promotes healthy lifestyles as well as improving social skills.

“It puts you in contact with people you may not otherwise be in contact with.

“It is good for young people to see police officers out of uniform in a social setting.”

Tackling anti social behaviour and youth nuisance in Stanley is one of the priorities for the neighbourhood teams.

Insp Martin, who was promoted in April, said she wants her officers to engage with youth and community groups as part of her new role.

She said: “We want to be able to see what makes them tick and get involved with them.

“This is a small place where people know each other and it is important to connect with people. It will create a nicer environment and make it a better place to live in and work.”
