A SCHOOLGIRL has shaved off her waist-length hair in support of cancer victims.

Fourteen-year-old Anna Cartridge had her brown locks chopped at The Ball Alley Pub, at Shield Row, near Stanley, County Durham, on Saturday.

The Tanfield School pupil, who is from Stanley, has raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research.

She is donating two feet of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs for children who are suffering hair loss.

Anna said: “Cancer is an illness which has affected our family’s lives for many generations.

“Not only have I done this in loving memory of all those it has taken the lives of, but also for a very special lady, a very good family friend, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

“Macmillan provides a source of both medical and emotional support for both those affected by cancer as well as carers and family as it’s not only the patients who are affected.

“I chose Macmillan as my charity to donate to as cancer is something which should not be faced alone and Macmillan is a constant source of support for many who suffer from cancer.

“I am extremely grateful for any donations and support.”

Anna still has signed Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC shirts, which she plans to auction for the charities.
