AN ARMY cadet used a prestigious bursary to have the adventure of a lifetime.

Corporal Christy Hunter, a Rifles cadet from the Stanley detachment of Durham Army Cadet Force, won a Matthew Bacon Bursary, of which two are offered annually.

The fund was set up in memory of a British Army officer killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2005.

Christy, 17, used the bursary to take part in the 22-day Ultimate Adventure course in the Scottish Highlands last month.

She sailed for two days, scaled Ben Nevis, trekked through Glen Gour for four days, climbed five Monro mountains and sea kayaked for three days, as well as taking part in rock climbing, scrambling, gorge walking and a 24-hour solo expedition.

She said: “The Ultimate Adventure was the best three weeks of my life.

“I learnt a lot about myself and other people and I know I am a better person for it.”
