TWO masked men armed with axes who forced their way into Post Office with a crowbar are being hunted by detectives.
Police were called to York Road in Peterlee at around 9.30am this morning.
Officers understand the men made off in a Black Peugeot 307 towards an industrial estate.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “On leaving the Post Office the men have thrown a weapon at a van parked outside.
“It is unknown if anything has been taken at this time. Nobody was injured and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
Both males are described as around 5ft 10ins wearing black balaclavas and dark clothing. One male was armed with a yellow crow bar and a black drawstring sports bag.
Several houses in the Peterlee area have since been raided by police and two people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
