A POPPY display made from stones and shells from the County Durham coastline has been laid out as a tribute to those who have died in conflict.

Hundreds of shells, stones and whelks were used to create the display, which has been placed at the foot of the Tommy statue in Seaham to mark Remembrance Day.

The Fruits of the Sea display was created by David McKenna and Philip Ridley, who both served in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and Seaham resident Margaret Lennox, who are part of Seaham's Remember Them Fund.

Last year they created a 16ft poppy out of pebbles, which were collected from the beach and painted.

Mrs Lennox said: "Last year was the first time we had done it but it was so successful and people were so interested we have tried to do something again.

"We wanted to do something a bit better and more artistic. We're quite proud of it."

The poppy is accompanied by the date 1917-2017 in recognition of the century which has passed since the beginning of the First World War.

The display was laid out on Sunday and will be in place until after Remembrance Day.
