SCHOOLCHILDREN worked alongside police to crack down on speeding motorists.

Youngsters from Easington Colliery Primary School took on roles as Junior Road Safety Officers to monitor vehicle speeds on Seaside Lane, which most pupils cross on their way to school.

Alongside PCSOs, children recorded speeds, as well as driver details where necessary, reminding drivers of the dangers of speeding so close to the primary school.

Inspector Ian Blakemore, of Seaham Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “It’s critically important that our kids have a good understanding of road safety, and one of the best ways to teach them is to get them involved.

“The Junior Road Safety Officers did a fantastic job of monitoring traffic around the school, and that in turn has put a spotlight on the road users’ own responsibilities for safe driving.”

The children take their Road Safety duties very seriously, and carry out other important roles in the school such as organising competitions, holding road safety assemblies, and working with parents and visitors to ensure safe parking in the correct areas around school.

Similar activities are planned when children return to school in September.
